Energy and Environmental Management
Energy makes up the greater part of a paint shop’s operating cost. The items that most affect the payback period calculated in the investment decision also fall under this heading.
How the process works
The greatest loss is heated air discharged outside. Heat exchangers fitted to oven and booth exhausts preheat incoming fresh air with the heat of the discharged air. The gain grows in proportion to operating hours and outside air temperature.
The surface treatment line is the centre of water and chemical consumption. A cascade rinsing arrangement, feeding clean water at the last stage and using the dirtier water backwards, markedly reduces consumption.
Emission and wastewater measurement points must be provided at the design stage. Opening a measurement port later usually means a substantial intervention because of stack and pipework arrangements.
Measuring energy consumption by zone makes it visible how much each item of equipment uses. Consumption that is not measured cannot be improved.
