Automotive is the sector with the strictest surface treatment specifications. Because body corrosion warranties exceed ten years, the coating system must be continuous even in the hidden and inaccessible areas of the vehicle.
Process requirements of the sector
Because the body contains closed sections and weld pockets, cataphoresis is essential; spray application cannot reach these voids. The throwing power of the cataphoresis bath is a standard item in acceptance testing.
After cataphoresis, cavity wax is applied to closed sections. The wax forms a second barrier where the coating reaches but remains thin.
Cycle time is decisive in automotive. The line is calculated backwards from the annual production volume, and the cost of unplanned downtime is far higher than in other sectors — which makes buffer zone planning critical.
